Ollie, a privacy-focused AI family assistant, will shut down Nov. 6

Its CEO said bigger rivals made it too hard to stand out and raise money.

Ollie, a startup that sold an AI assistant built around user privacy, will shut down its app Nov. 6, co-founder and CEO Bill Lennon said on X on Oct. 30, TechCrunch reported.

Ollie was a paid, text-based assistant for busy families.  It connected to a user's email and calendar and helped book appointments, plan meals and pay bills, TechCrunch said.  It was one of the first mainstream apps to earn SOC 2, a certification that requires an outside audit of how a company protects customer data.

The startup raised $7.5 million in seed money, its first major funding, in a round led by Silicon Valley investor Khosla Ventures, TechCrunch reported in September.

"We got close, but ultimately couldn't keep up," Lennon wrote.  He said that with rival AI assistants such as Muse and Instinct entering the market, it became harder to stand out, grow and raise money.

Users will get instructions in the coming days on how to export their data and receive refunds, Lennon said.
