Mistral AI, a French artificial intelligence company, said Oct. 29 that it has released the weights of Mistral Large 4, its top model, so anyone can download it and run it on their own computers.  Weights are the vast set of numbers a model learns during training, and sharing them lets others use and modify the model freely.

Mistral said the model has about 1 trillion of those learned settings, called parameters, and can read images as well as text.  The company said it ranks first among downloadable models at writing computer code on several industry tests, and is strong at defensive security work like finding software flaws.

Mistral also said that while watching how people used an earlier preview, it saw "a potential for uplift to conduct real attacks," meaning the model could help hackers.  It said it is tightening its safety rules.

Businesses may use and change the model for free, but companies that sell access to AI models as a service need a separate license from Mistral.
