Musk says Grok Bot’s costs were ‘unsustainably high’ after users’ weekly limits suddenly ran out
Some subscribers to SpaceX’s AI agent found their allowances maxed out over Halloween weekend.
Elon Musk said the cost of running Grok Bot, SpaceX’s AI assistant, was “unsustainably high relative to revenue,” after some subscribers found their weekly usage allowances suddenly used up. Musk made the comment Nov. 1 in a reply on X, and TechCrunch first reported the change Nov. 2.
Grok Bot is an AI agent, software that does tasks for a person rather than just answering questions. SpaceX’s product page says each Grok Bot gets its own cloud computer and can use apps for its owner around the clock. Weekly allowances limit how much work it can do.
Plans start at $30 a month, and higher tiers buy more weekly use, the product page says. Over Halloween weekend, some users saw their meters jump from as low as 50% to 100%, even without using the bot overnight, TechCrunch reported. Musk confirmed it was not a glitch but has not said how limits will change.
The limits hit a product that SpaceX has held up as a success. SpaceX said in a filing last month that AI now makes up 52% of company income, TechCrunch reported.
