Gloria Steinem was a journalist and feminist organizer who co-founded Ms. magazine.  She died Sept. 2 at her home in New York City at age 92, according to a statement from her and Gloria's Foundation reported by Ms.  The statement said she died peacefully with people who loved her around her, and that she kept working for equality to the end.  No cause was given.

Born March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem graduated from Smith College in 1956.  In 1963 she worked undercover as a Playboy Club waitress for a magazine article on its working conditions.  She helped found New York magazine in 1968.  Ms. published its first regular issue in July 1972.  She also helped start the National Women's Political Caucus and the Ms. Foundation for Women.  President Barack Obama gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

Her memoir, "An Unexpected Life," was published after her death.  She married activist David Bale in 2000; he died in 2003 at 62.  She had no children, and her older sister, Susanne Steinem Patch, died in 2007.
