Barbara Barrie (Actress), Oscar nominee for 'Breaking Away,' dies at 95
Barbara Barrie was a stage and screen actress who earned an Oscar nomination for playing the mother, Evelyn Stohler, in "Breaking Away." She died Oct. 28 at her home in Manhattan at age 95, her agent, Gary Gersh, said. He said her death was medically assisted under New York's Medical Aid in Dying law, which she had backed. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, said she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The law, which took effect Aug. 5, lets terminally ill adults with less than six months to live take prescribed medicine to end their lives.
Barrie won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for "One Potato, Two Potato" (1964). She was nominated for a Tony for the original Broadway cast of "Company" in 1971. Her "Breaking Away" role came in 1979. On TV, she played Barney's wife on "Barney Miller" and earned Emmy nominations for "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: SVU."
Barrie's husband, Jay Harnick, a co-founder of TheatreWorks USA, died in 2007 at 78. Barrie is survived by her daughter, Jane Harnick, and her son, Aaron Harnick.
