Mountain View's Kodiak signs deal to run 75 driverless trucks for a Fresno trucking company

DTL Transport will pay Kodiak a fee for every mile its self-driving system drives, starting on Texas and Southern routes.

Kodiak AI, a Mountain View company that makes self-driving systems for big trucks, said Oct. 28 it has a binding deal to put its technology in 75 driverless trucks for DTL Transport, a long-haul trucking company based in Fresno.

Kodiak said it is the first binding commitment of its kind by a long-haul trucking company to run driverless trucks in its own fleet.  DTL will pay Kodiak a fee for every mile driven by the Kodiak Driver, the company's self-driving system.

The trucks will run on Interstate 10 between Dallas and El Paso, Texas, and Interstate 20 between Dallas and Atlanta, Kodiak said.  It said those routes let DTL run beyond the current limits on how many hours a human driver can work.  The announcement did not give a start date.

In September, a Kodiak truck hauled perishable goods for DTL 225 miles between Fresno and Los Angeles as part of a test program, the company said.  Kodiak called it the first time a self-driving big rig hauled paying freight in California.

"The Driver-As-A-Service business model is tailor-made for commercial trucking," said Don Burnette, Kodiak's founder and CEO.
