Anthropic's Claude AI now 40% off for government agencies, including cities and states

A new federal buying deal lets city, county, state and tribal governments pay only for what they use, with no minimum order.

Government offices can now buy Anthropic's Claude AI tools at a 40% discount, under an expanded deal announced Oct. 27 by the U.S. General Services Administration and Anthropic.  The GSA is the agency that handles buying for the federal government.

The deal now also covers state, local, tribal and territorial governments, such as cities and counties, according to Anthropic and Carahsoft, a large reseller of technology to governments.  Agencies pay only for what they use, with no minimum order, the GSA said.  Use is billed by tokens, small chunks of text that AI models read and write.

The discount covers Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API, the tool programmers use to build Claude into their own software.  Carahsoft said Oct. 30 that the discount lasts through Jan. 31, 2029, and that each agency sets a spending cap.

Anthropic, a San Francisco AI company, said about 500 U.S. government groups already use Claude.  It estimated the deal will save them about $1 billion.  In one example, Utah gave Anthropic's coding tool to 34 developers in 10 state agencies for a four-week trial, and 71% said they saved 20 hours or more, Anthropic said.
