Anthropic’s quarterly sales hit $17 billion, more than 12 times a year earlier, updated IPO filing shows
The San Francisco maker of Claude also swung to an operating loss, blaming costly short-term computing power.
Anthropic, the San Francisco company that makes the Claude AI models, took in $17.0 billion in revenue in the three months ended Sept. 30. That is up 1,127% from $1.4 billion a year earlier, according to an updated IPO filing Anthropic made with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Nov. 2.
The filing is an amended S-1, the disclosure document a company must file before it first sells stock to the public. Sales rose from $11.6 billion in the prior quarter. For all of 2023, Anthropic’s revenue was $41 million.
Costs are climbing fast, too. Anthropic had an operating loss of $567 million for the quarter, after an operating profit of $974 million the quarter before. The filing blames $5.0 billion of computing power bought on short-term deals, which it says costs much more than computing under multi-year contracts, plus $2.0 billion in non-cash charges for its donation matching program.
Its bottom-line net loss was $23.3 billion for the quarter. Most of that was an accounting charge for the rising value of convertible notes and other investments that can turn into Anthropic stock, the filing shows.
Anthropic also says it signed about $895.4 billion in new purchase commitments after Sept. 30, nearly all for computing. It plans to list on Nasdaq under the symbol “ANT,” but the share price range is still blank.
