OPPD board committee recommends COO Troy Via as interim CEO; full board votes Nov. 19

President and CEO Javier Fernandez plans to step down at the end of the year, OPPD says.

OMAHA - The Omaha Public Power District board's Governance Committee has recommended that Troy Via, the utility's chief operating officer and vice president of utility operations, serve as interim president and CEO starting Jan. 1, 2027, according to an OPPD news release.

Via would fill in for President and CEO Javier Fernandez, who announced this week that he will leave at the end of the year for a new opportunity, the release says. The committee plans to present its recommendation at the board's Nov. 17 all-committee meeting, and the full board is scheduled to vote at its Nov. 19 regular meeting. The board also plans to search for a permanent chief executive.

Mary Spurgeon, who chairs the board's Governance Committee, said in the release that the committee has "confidence in Troy's experience, operational knowledge, and ability to provide continuity and stability during this interim period."

Via joined OPPD in September 2013 as director of energy marketing and trading and became vice president of energy delivery in 2018, according to the release. Since 2021 he has led the Utility Operations business unit, which has more than 1,000 employees.
