Lab's quantum summer school draws 20 students to new downtown center

Students picked from more than 1,000 applicants worked with Lab mentors in the new Center for Quantum Computing.

LOS ALAMOS - Twenty students chosen from more than 1,000 applicants spent the summer working with Los Alamos National Laboratory quantum computing experts, the Lab said in an Oct. 22 release.

The Quantum Computing Summer School paired lectures from academic and industry experts with mentor-led research projects in quantum algorithms, simulation, sensing, chemistry and hardware. It met in the Lab's new Center for Quantum Computing building, which a photo caption places in downtown Los Alamos. Organizers said the shared open workspace sparked new collaborations among students.

Speakers included University of New Mexico professors Ivan Deutsch and Milad Marvian, scientists from the quantum company Xanadu and former Los Alamos scientists Rolando Somma and Lorenza Viola.

Kunal Sharma, a 2019 summer school student who now leads a quantum algorithms team at IBM, returned to speak. He said the school "was instrumental in shaping my research taste."

Student Jehu Martinez of Illinois Institute of Technology said he got meaningful results and is "now working on turning those results into a manuscript."
