Union petition asks USU to add Taggart Student Center custodians and undo schedule changes
United Campus Workers of Utah lists five requests for the TSC director and board.
LOGAN - Custodians at Utah State University's Taggart Student Center are asking building leadership to add staff and reverse recent changes to their work, according to a petition posted by United Campus Workers of Utah. The petition is addressed to TSC Director Ray Cheatham and the TSC Board.
As of Nov. 5, the union's petition page listed 286 signatures toward a goal of 400.
The petition says the Marketplace now opens seven days a week during The Junction's renovation, and contends the director has refused to hire custodians or allow overtime for the added days. It argues a new team-based cleaning system will cause delays.
What the petition asks
- Hire two part-time custodians for the added weekend days, starting at $13 to $14 an hour.
- Restore the original schedule and train weekend staff.
- Repeal changes to task teams and supervisory duties.
- End the ban on comp time.
- Set up a way for employees and the custodial supervisor to have a voice in workplace decisions.
The Cache Citizen has asked Utah State University for comment and will update this story with any response.
Why this matters
The petition says the Taggart Student Center is funded by student fees and that The Junction renovation has the Marketplace open seven days a week, which the union says creates a need for weekend custodial coverage.
