SUU women's soccer needs a result Thursday to keep Big Sky tournament hopes alive
Home finale vs. Utah Tech is at 1 p.m. at Thunderbird Soccer Field; a path also depends on Idaho State at Weber State.
CEDAR CITY - Southern Utah women's soccer can still reach the Big Sky Championship with a result against Utah Tech at 1 p.m. Thursday at Thunderbird Soccer Field, according to an SUU Athletics release dated Nov. 3.
The Thunderbirds are 2-4-2 in Big Sky play with eight points, seventh in the 10-team league and one point behind sixth-place Idaho State. Only the top six advance to Missoula, Mont., on Nov. 11, 13 and 15. Utah Tech (3-2-3, 12 points) has already clinched.
A SUU win sends the Thunderbirds in as the No. 6 seed unless Idaho State wins at Weber State in a game that also kicks off at 1 p.m.; a draw is enough if Weber State beats Idaho State; a loss ends SUU's season, the release says. Thursday is the first Big Sky meeting between the two southern Utah programs. SUU has 30 goals this season, one shy of the program record of 31 set in 2022.
Head coach Steven Lindquist said "even this last match matters and has an impact on the post season."
