Flood watch covers Parowan and Brian Head from late Saturday night through Sunday

The National Weather Service says heavy rain on wet ground could flood creeks, washes and backcountry roads.

PAROWAN - The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a flood watch at 8:05 a.m. Friday for a stretch of southern Utah that includes Parowan and Brian Head. The watch runs from late Saturday night through 11 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.

A flood watch means flooding is possible, not that it is happening. The weather service says it may upgrade to a flood warning if flooding develops.

In Iron County, the watch covers the weather service's Southern Mountains zone, where Parowan and Brian Head sit. Cedar City and Enoch are in the Southwest Utah zone, which was not under the watch as of 4:20 p.m. Friday.

Forecasters expect widespread moderate to at times heavy rain across southern Utah from late Saturday night through Sunday. Because recent heavy rains have already soaked the ground, the weather service says runoff will be fast, washes, streams and rivers will run high, and backcountry roads will likely become impassable.

The watch warns of possible flooding in rivers, creeks, dry washes, slot canyons, slickrock areas and recent burn scars. People who live in flood-prone areas should be ready to act if flooding develops and keep checking later forecasts, the weather service said.
