The program includes the U.S. premiere of a quintet for bassoon and strings by composer Arlene Sierra, with faculty bassoonist Ben Roidl-Ward; Shulamit Ran's third string quartet, Glitter, Doom, Shards, Memory; and Alban Berg's Lyric Suite. Tickets are $25 standard, $20 for seniors, $15 for non-U of I college students and $10 for U of I students and youth.
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, shakuhachi player Kojiro Umezaki and the Detroit-based Hub New Music perform "a distance, intertwined," a program by composers of the Asia/America New Music Institute that includes a premiere by Niall Taro Ferguson. Admission is free, but tickets are required; some audience members sit on stage, the center says.
Umezaki and Hub members also lead a free Improvisers Exchange workshop on the shakuhachi and improvisation at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in the Orchestra Rehearsal Room.
