The junior won four straight main-draw matches before falling to top seed Piper Charney of Michigan on Monday.

URBANA - Illinois junior Ariel Madatali reached the singles semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional for the first time in her career, according to Illinois Athletics, as the five-day tournament at Atkins Tennis Center wrapped up Monday, Oct. 12.

Madatali won four straight main-draw matches, beating players from Western Michigan, Northwestern twice and a fellow Illini, the recap says. In Monday's semifinals she lost 6-1, 6-0 to the tournament's top overall seed, Michigan's No. 6-ranked Piper Charney. She then lost the third-place match 6-2, 6-3 to Michigan's Olivia Traynor, ranked No. 116.

As a team, Illinois won 19 singles matches and seven doubles matches over the tournament, which Illinois hosted, the athletics department says. Head coach Elizabeth Lumpkin Robinson and associate head coach Calvin Song made their coaching debuts at Atkins Tennis Center during the event.
